Sanef ITS Operations Ireland Case Study

Sanef ITS Operations Ireland is an Irish company who directly employ 110 people and similar number indirectly. Since 2007 it has been the operator of the electronic tolling system on the M50 and eFlow, the best known electronic tag system for Ireland’s toll motorways. It is a subsidiary of Sanef Groupe, the French specialist motorway operator with operations in six European countries and Canada. Founded in 1963, Sanef Groupe has revenues of over €1.5 billion and manages nearly 2,000km of motorway. It has a majority ownership by Spanish conglomerate Abertis.

Problem to be solved

Due to over 20% growth of traffic on the M50 since the electronic toll system was introduced Sanef required an upgrade in their IT infrastructure. With the increased traffic their datasets also increased which meant they were approaching their 22TB capacity; this was mission critical as it underpins their entire business function and ICT planning.

What was the customer looking for

Towards the end of 2012, Sanef began their standard ICT planning exercise with a substantial amount of kit. They identified working with smarter systems as a priority to provide more flexibility and for the alignment of IT to the business and its growth. This is where the Infrastructure-as-a-Service idea came to mind.

Why was Digital Planet selected

Digital Planet was selected due to our scalable Infrastructure-as-a-Service solution, ISO270001 accreditation, fully managed 24×7 support, and removal of the requirement on Sanef continue purchasing hardware for their increasing storage requirements. We worked hand in hand with Sanef to investigate the TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) for a Private Cloud offering versus a Physical onsite offering over for the next 4-5 years and the results were compellingly in favour of Digital Planet’s Infrastructure as a Service platform.
